Solid dosage forms are used for internal or external use and covers unit dosage forms and bulk dosage forms. Amongst these solid dosage forms, unit dosage forms in which doses are taken in different numbers are mostly preferred and are popular. Such unit dosage forms used for internal use include tablets, capsules, pills, cachets, etc. Usually, these dosage forms contain unit quantity of drug and therefore referred as unit dosage forms.
Tablets are solid unit, flat biconvex dosage forms containing medicaments prepared by compressing drug(s) with or without suitable pharmaceutical excipients. They may vary in size, shape, weight, hardness, thickness, disintegration and dissolution characteristics and in other aspects, depending on their intended use and method of manufacture. Amongst the various dosage forms, 90% tablets dosage forms are used clinically to provide systemic administration of therapeutic agents. Due to wide use of tablets, they found to be convenient and also available in their different types. These are prepared by compression of granules or molding powder blends. Most tablets are used in the oral administration of drugs. Many of these are prepared with coloring agents and coatings of various types. Other tablets, such as sublingual, buccal, or vaginal tablets, are prepared to have features most applicable to their particular route of administration.
